Main Street Mower compared it with the mid-size STIHL HT 56 C-E and the larger HT 135 on branches of different sizes and heights. The test shows where the light battery model holds its own, and where the extra reach and bar length of a gas saw still matter.

The comparison focuses on the questions most homeowners face before buying a pole saw: Can it reach the branch? Can it cut the branch? And will you still want to use it after several cuts?

The HTA 30 is 10 pounds lighter than the HT 135, while the HT 135 is about 4 feet longer and carries a much larger bar. That difference drives almost every buying decision in this comparison.

STIHL HTA 30: light weight for routine pruning

The STIHL HTA 30 Battery Powered Pole Pruner is the smallest and lightest tool in the group. At 8 pounds, it is far easier to position overhead than either gas model.

Its 6-inch bar and chain are intended for pruning rather than large-diameter cutting. However, the test showed that a smaller bar does not mean the tool is limited to tiny twigs.

What the video found

The HTA 30 runs on two AS 2 batteries, and the testers expected roughly 30 minutes of runtime. STIHL lists up to 28 minutes of runtime and about 140 cuts in 2-by-2-inch dry wood, although actual results depend on branch size, wood condition, cutting technique, and battery condition.

After several cuts during the test, the battery indicator still showed two bars. For a homeowner tackling a few overgrown limbs, that can be enough time to finish the job without mixing fuel, pulling a starter cord, or handling a heavier saw.

Handling takeaway: The HTA 30's biggest advantage is the effort it saves overhead. Eight pounds makes a major difference when the work involves repeated cuts with your arms raised.

STIHL HT 56 C-E: a mid-size gas alternative

The STIHL HT 56 C-E Gas Powered Pole Pruner matches the HTA 30's 9-foot-3-inch overall length, but it uses a 27 cc two-stroke engine and a 10-inch bar. At 14 pounds, it lands between the battery model and the larger HT 135.

STIHL lists the HT 56 C-E at 1.1 horsepower with a 10-inch bar and a dry weight of 14 pounds in its HT 56 C-E specifications. The larger bar gives it more cutting capacity than the HTA 30, while its gas tank allows an operator to refuel and continue working.

The coupler is for transport, not attachments

The HT 56 C-E has a coupler that lets the pole separate into two pieces for easier transport. It does not turn the saw into a STIHL KombiSystem powerhead.

The video points out that STIHL Combi attachments, such as hedge trimmer attachments, will not fit this model because the HT 56 uses a special spline shaft. Buyers who want a dedicated gas pole pruner may appreciate the break-apart design, but they should not purchase it expecting attachment compatibility.

STIHL HT 135: reach and cutting capacity come first

The STIHL HT 135 Telescoping Pole Pruner is the heavy-duty option in this test. Its 13-foot-3-inch length gives it about 4 more feet of tool reach than the HTA 30 and HT 56 C-E.

It also carries a 14-inch bar and a 36 cc STIHL 4-MIX engine rated at roughly 2 horsepower in the video. That equipment makes the HT 135 the clear choice when the job calls for larger cuts or branches that sit higher above the ground.

How the larger gas saw cut

During the branch test, the HT 135 showed smooth cutting with low vibration. The operator could set the chain on the wood and then pull the trigger, and the saw had enough torque to keep cutting without bogging down.

The chain only struggled when a falling limb pinched it. That can happen with any saw, which is why thoughtful cut placement and an undercut matter. The HT 135 has the power and bar size for substantial work, but those strengths come with an 18-pound tool that requires more effort to control.

Cutting a low branch with the HTA 30

The first cutting test used a downward-facing branch on a pink tabebuia tree. Since the limb was low, the HTA 30 did not need full extension. That allowed the testers to focus on torque, cut speed, and balance.

The saw made a clean undercut, then completed the cut from above. This approach helps control the break and can reduce bark tearing on the remaining branch.

A basic branch-cutting sequence

For a limb that may split or tear as it falls, the video demonstrated a simple two-part approach:

  1. Start with a small undercut on the underside of the branch.

  2. Move above the branch and finish the cut slightly farther out.

  3. Stand clear of the branch's fall path and avoid positioning yourself directly beneath it.

The HTA 30 cut the low branch smoothly and felt easy to maneuver. The testers described its cutting action as "like butter," while also noting how quickly the light tool could move from one pruning cut to the next.

The HTA 30 reached higher than its size suggests

A later test targeted a branch estimated to be about 15 feet high. The HTA 30 itself measures 9 feet 3 inches, yet a user's height and arm reach add useful working height.

The operator worked upward toward the branch rather than trying to make one cut directly under a large limb. That reduced the chance of bringing a heavy section down overhead.

One-handed control changed the feel of the job

The HTA 30's low weight made it possible to guide the saw one-handed during portions of the test. That does not remove the need for steady footing and control, but it changes how tiring the tool feels compared with a larger gas pole pruner.

Pole-saw work puts stress on the shoulders, arms, neck, and back. A 10-pound weight difference may sound modest on paper, yet it is significant when the tool is extended above shoulder height. The lighter saw also looked like the better option if a user needed to work from a ladder, though ground-based pruning is preferable whenever the branch can be reached safely.

A small battery pole pruner handled a large oak limb

The strongest surprise in the test came from the HTA 30's cut on a large live oak branch. The limb was described as around forearm size or larger, far beyond the tiny trimming jobs many people associate with a compact battery tool.

The saw cut through it without a noticeable bog-down. That result showed substantial torque for a 6-inch-bar pole pruner.

Keep the result in context

This test does not mean the HTA 30 replaces the HT 135 for every pruning job. The larger gas saw still offers more reach, a 14-inch bar, more engine power, and the ability to keep going after a fuel stop.

However, the test does show that the HTA 30 can handle more than light touch-up pruning. For many residential branches within its reach and cutting capacity, the lighter battery saw may be the tool that gets used most often.

Rubber grips do not make power lines safe

The video discusses the rubber grip as more than a comfort feature. Rubber can provide insulation, and the presenters shared an example of a hedge trimmer contacting a home's power line while the operator held the insulated grip.

That story should not be treated as permission to work near electrical lines. A pole saw extends your reach, and that extra reach can put the operator, saw, and branch much closer to overhead conductors.

Safety note: Do not rely on a rubber grip to protect you from electrical contact. OSHA's line-clearance tree-trimming guidance says unqualified workers must maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from overhead power lines.

If a branch is within that clearance distance, contact the utility or a qualified tree-care professional. Keep both hands on the intended insulated grip areas, and never hold exposed metal parts near an electrical hazard.

Four more feet of reach matters, but weight changes usable reach

On paper, the HT 135 has a major reach advantage. It measures 13 feet 3 inches, compared with 9 feet 3 inches for the HTA 30. For high limbs, that added length can prevent the need for a ladder or make a cut possible from the ground.

Still, the video makes an important practical point. The heavier HT 135 needs a more stable two-handed hold, which may force the operator to keep it lower and closer to the body. The HTA 30 can sometimes be held farther out because it weighs so much less.

The reach difference depends on the operator

The 4-foot length advantage remains real, especially for taller limbs. Yet the testers felt the practical difference could feel closer to 2 feet in certain working positions because the HT 135's engine weight limits how high and comfortably it can be held.

A longer pole is useful only when you can maintain control. The right model should match both the branch height and the operator's ability to handle it safely.

Runtime, refueling, and the length of the job

Battery runtime is a real limit for the HTA 30. The video's estimate of about 30 minutes aligns closely with STIHL's listed maximum runtime, although thick live wood and continuous cutting can shorten that window.

For many homeowners, a half hour of overhead pruning is a meaningful amount of work. By the time the batteries need charging, the operator may be ready to stop, clear cut material, and rest.

Gas models have a different advantage. Once the HT 56 C-E or HT 135 runs low, you can refuel and keep working. Spare AS 2 batteries can extend the HTA 30's useful workday, but charging time and battery availability should factor into the purchase.

Short residential jobs favor the HTA 30's convenience. Bigger jobs with continuous cutting favor refueling or extra battery capacity.

For a professional crew, the video suggests a two-saw approach. The HTA 30 can handle a large share of routine pruning, while the HT 135 stays ready for high branches and heavier cuts that call for its reach and capacity.
