Gas Lawn Mowers: Still Worth It in 2025? We Check Every Store

Are gas-powered lawn mowers going the way of the dinosaur? Not quite yet! We hit all the big box stores and a local dealer to see what the gas mower situation looks like in 2025. Finding a good gas mower might feel like an Easter egg hunt these days, but if you're still a fan of gas power, this one's for you.

The Great Gas Mower Disappearing Act?

There's a rumor going around that gas mowers are vanishing from stores. While it's true that battery-powered mowers are taking over shelf space, reports of the gas mower's demise are greatly exaggerated!

Why bother with gas anyway? For some, it's about the raw power and runtime you can get without worrying about batteries. Plus, you don't need to worry about batteries degrading after a few years.

Lowe's: Battery Mower City with a Gas Mower Corner

Walking into Lowe's, you're greeted by a sea of battery-powered mowers. Ego has a huge display, and there are some seriously expensive battery models, like those priced at $899, $999, and $1,199. If you've got a small yard, are you really looking to spend that much?

Toro also has a lineup of battery mowers that are competitively priced with Ego. The good news is that Toro uses the same frame as their gas mowers, so your local dealer will likely have parts. Cobalt, Lowe's store brand, has a 16-inch cut model for $299. It might be tempting, but that small cut width will take you a while.

What about gas mowers? They're tucked away at the end of the aisle. There are a few Toro models, like the 21466 with a 150cc engine and Smart Stow. You can also find models with the larger 163cc engine. There's a basic 140cc Toro that's rear-wheel drive but doesn't have Personal Pace, which is the lowest-priced self-propelled Toro. Craftsman has a 140cc push mower for $369. Spending just $30 more for a self-propelled model seems like a no-brainer.

Tractor Supply: Toro, Troy-Bilt, and Value

Tractor Supply carries Toro, Bad Boy, Cub Cadet, and Troy-Bilt.

Inside, you'll find a decent selection of push mowers. They have two-line units: a Viper (with what seems to be a knockoff engine) and a DR with a Briggs & Stratton engine. Spend the extra money and go with the DR. You'll get much better part support.

The least expensive gas Toro is a push mower with a 140cc Briggs engine. Troy-Bilt has a similar push mower. At the same price, the Toro is the better bet due to its larger dealer network for parts and warranty.

For self-propelled options, both Toro and Troy-Bilt have front-wheel drive models with 163cc engines. The Troy-Bilt has a three-year warranty versus Toro's two-year warranty. Toro also offers an all-wheel drive model with a 163cc engine.

If you have a smaller yard and don't need a mower to last for 20 years, Toro or Troy-Bilt are decent options. However, Toro has better support overall.

Home Depot: Ryobi's World and Dusty Gas Mowers

Home Depot is all about Ryobi battery power. They start strong with those, going from $650 down to $299 for a tiny mower.

Honda no longer makes gas-powered 21-inch mowers, but they do have battery-powered versions. Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita also have mowers that are competitively priced, if you're already in those battery ecosystems.

The gas mower selection is limited and looks a bit neglected. There's a DeWalt walk mower that's likely made by someone else, which means part support could be a nightmare. Then there are Murray mowers, seemingly trying to hit that old $300 price point by making sacrifices in quality. These have small engines, light-duty decks, and tiny wheels.

Strangely, even though Home Depot is listed as a Toro dealer, there weren't any Toros to be found.

Walmart: Budget Options Abound

Walmart features the Greenworks line of battery mowers. They also carry the Hart brand, which is their in-house brand.

The Hypertough push mower is incredibly cheap, but it has a tiny engine, small wheels, and no self-propel. You get what you pay for.

Troy-Bilt has both self-propelled and push mowers, all with 163cc engines. That's a decent amount of power for the price.

Here's a mower from us that's similar to the ones at Walmart. Check out the TORO 22 in. (56cm) Recycler® w/Personal Pace® Gas Lawn Mower (21462) .

Ace Hardware: Stihl Steps Up

Ace Hardware has a nice Stihl section, with both battery and gas mowers. Stihl gas mowers are a relatively new thing. They all have Kohler engines and aluminum decks. A cool design feature is the single arm up to the handle. The handle also folds forward with a release lever.

Ace also carries a limited selection of Toro mowers. There's a front-wheel drive model with Smart Stow and a 150cc engine.

Main Street Mower: Our Home Turf

We might be biased, but we think we have the best selection. Toro makes both a Recycler and a Super Recycler. What's the difference? The Super Recycler is Toro's premium machine. It has a five-year warranty, an aluminum deck, a better transmission, and a better cutting system.

For heavy-duty use, there are Scag and Toro commercial mowers. The Toro commercial mower has a Kawasaki engine with an oil filter, a one-gallon fuel tank, a nice air filter, and a three-speed transmission.

We recommend buying from a dealer because you'll need parts and service eventually. We choose Toro because they have a great support system and a wide range of products, from entry-level to commercial.

The Mower Market: Final Thoughts

Battery mowers are everywhere, and new brands are popping up constantly. But when it comes to gas mowers, the selection is limited.

Stanley Black & Decker now owns MTD, which includes Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Craftsman, and DeWalt. Stihl and Toro are the main independent players. Murray is still around, but it's best to choose a brand with better support.

Cub Cadet makes nice 21-inch mowers, but they cut a little too low for Florida grass, which is a problem in some markets. If you are in a market with lower cutting requirements and have a good Cub Cadet dealer, a Cub Cadet might be a good option for you.

The Mower Shop Hunt: Mission Impossible

We called every dealer in town, and most either didn't carry push mowers anymore or only carried Toro (which we already have). Some were Cub Cadet dealers but didn't have any 21-inch mowers in stock. Finding a mower shop with a full display of gas-powered 21-inch mowers was nearly impossible.

STIHL's New Offering: The RM 453

Stihl has a new gas-powered mower series called the RM 453. It has a better price point and a higher cutting height. We'll be carrying this model, and you can also find it at Ace Hardware. For more on new Stihl products, check out our video reviewing the new 2025 Stihl product catalog.

Our Top Picks for 2025

So, what's the best gas lawn mower you can buy in 2025?

  1. Toro 21565 Super Recycler: It's $799, has a five-year warranty, an aluminum deck, a beautiful cut, and Smart Stow.
  2. Toro 21462: Also a very nice machine that won't break the bank.

No matter what you choose, remember that choosing a mower with a good dealer network is important for the life of your mower.
